On Friday, June 21st, a lively hustings event took place for the Bournemouth East constituency, featuring candidates Tobias Ellwood (Conservative), Tom Hayes (Labour), Jon Nicholas (Liberal Democrat), Joe Salmon (Green Party), and Martin Houlden (Reform UK). The event, hosted at Immanuel Church in Southbourne, saw candidates field a variety of questions submitted by members of HENRA and Southbourne Forum, leading to spirited yet respectful discussions on key issues affecting the community.
The candidates covered a wide range of topics, from local housing and environmental policies to economic strategies and even their political heroes. Tobias Ellwood emphasised his experience and track record, focusing on local policing and bringing new business and investment into the area, Tom Hayes highlighted the importance of social justice and economic reforms, while Jon Nicholas advocated for increased local investment and transparency. Joe Salmon brought environmental concerns to the forefront, stressing the need for sustainable development, and Martin Houlden discussed reform-oriented policies aimed at shaking up the current political system.
Attendees praised the event’s organisation, with one candidate noting, “Last night’s event was probably the best managed and professionally run hustings event I’ve been to.” The commendations extended to the organising committees of HENRA and Southbourne Forum, whose efforts ensured a smooth and engaging evening.
Overall, the hustings provided local voters with a clear insight into each candidate’s platform and priorities, fostering an informed and active electorate. As the election approaches, events like these play a crucial role in democratic engagement, offering a platform for candidates to communicate their visions and for the public to ask questions on topics close to their hearts.
