Hengistbury Residents’ Association came about when there was a scheme to build bungalows on the open area of Hengistbury Head up to double dykes. This scheme was thought to be so detrimental to the area, that the Hengistbury Residents Association was formed to fight it.
The inaugural meeting, in Tuckton Tea gardens, on 10th February 1954 was attended by 200 people, including local ward councillors, with another 50 unable to get into the room. A loudspeaker van was organised with the slogan, “Hands off Hengistbury”.
Seventy years on, the organisation still follows true to that very first meeting. Each meeting has an update from a ward councillor and police officer on local matters.
Today we are a strong association with over 500 members. HENRA is open to all residents over 16 years of age living in households or owning a property in the Hengistbury Head and Wick areas of Southbourne as shown in the boundary outlined below.
